Overcoming Self-Doubt

In a sudden flash of inspiration, an idea burst forth out of the ether with rapid propagation of scalability and volume. I can see the potential and have a strong positive feeling the product would sell well if marketed and distributed properly. After taking the first step and reaching out to manufacturers, I used that momentum to propel myself forward. Yet as quickly as the idea had come, an equal and opposite force invaded my mind in the form of fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD).

I believe both the internal and external worlds always try to find equilibrium. Any idea that inspires hope and positive feelings are met with the opposite form of emotional energy in attempt to balance out. I can feel the battle taking place internally and there are voices that tell me every reason why it won’t work. I have to consciously combat these voices by speaking an opposing affirmation out loud. There’s something about these external affirmations that Tony Robbins teaches in his courses. He calls them incantations and it does have a magical connotation to it. I believe there are certain aspects of the mind and emotion that are beyond our understanding and the greatest asset in this circumstance is overwhelming faith. Luckily, these age-old tools have been passed down through books and the best lessons have been concentrated down to the simplest of tasks. Although the lesson is lost, it can be rediscovered through practice.

Developing an attitude for gratitude is a constant process. I try to take a morning walk to cultivate these feelings and internalize them. It’s like a shower of positive emotion. I can’t expect to shower once and be clean forever. I have to keep doing it. I am attempting to use my cell phone less and direct my mind and emotions more. I don’t think we practice this enough. In the same way professional actors can summon an emotion from within themselves, we too can master some aspect of it. We are all actors. Some of us are just clever enough to get paid for it. But that’s what it is: the actor’s technique. Sometimes pretending or imagining oneself in a positive future will direct the self to move toward that mental picture. One of my favorite affirmations came from The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale: “I expect the best and with God’s help, I will attain the best.” Whenever I am nervous or anxious before an important meeting or opportunity that literally slap myself in the face and repeat these words until there is no room for FUD. A strong physical action to accompany any attempts to sway a negative is welcome.

I am trying to create a new battery for some wireless speakers. I can do it better than the manufacturer and there are at least 50,000 owners worldwide. I like the idea of an international consumable product with a high price point. This means fewer customers, less complaints, and less turnover for higher profit per item. I can justify it as a premium product because the speakers are already positioned as top-of-the-line. I can exceed the manufacturer performance by a factor of 2x and offer at a price point that would offer a profit margin of 100%. I envision a new niche market appearing in the form of mobile music solutions to setup instantly anywhere without a power outlet. This market can expand into what I would call Solar Sound. It has a nice ring to it and will probably setup an entity to that effect. Of course, if I slow down or give up on this idea, you are here to steal it. I think competition is healthy and I’m just going to solve one problem at a time and see where this road leads. Wish me luck and I hope to meet a good business partner someday. Cheers.
