Are you looking for a deeper connection with God? Do you find yourself searching for meaning in life? As a backpacker who has spent countless hours trekking through mountains, forests, and deserts, I can tell you that nature is a powerful force that can lead you to find God.
One parable that has always resonated with me is the Parable of the Sower, found in Matthew 13:1-23. In this story, Jesus describes a farmer sowing seeds in different types of soil, and the results that come from each. The seeds that fall on rocky ground, among thorns, or on the path fail to grow, while the seeds that fall on good soil produce an abundant harvest.
As a backpacker, I have come across many different types of soil, both literal and figurative. I have seen rocky terrain that makes it difficult to move forward, thorns that scratch and tear at my skin, and paths that lead nowhere. But I have also seen fertile soil that sustains life and provides a path forward.
In the same way, our lives can be filled with obstacles that prevent us from finding God. We may encounter hardships and setbacks that make us doubt our faith. But just as the farmer in the parable continues to sow seeds, we too can persevere in our search for God.
One way to connect with God in nature is through prayer and meditation. Take a moment to stop and appreciate the beauty around you. Listen to the sounds of the wind, the birds, and the rustling of leaves. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on your face. Allow yourself to be still and quiet, and let the presence of God fill you.
Another way to find God in nature is through service. When we care for the environment, we are caring for God’s creation. We can pick up trash along the trail, conserve water and energy, and practice leave-no-trace principles. By doing so, we show our reverence for God’s gifts.
As you venture out on your next backpacking trip, keep the Parable of the Sower in mind. Remember that the seeds of faith can grow in even the most challenging environments. With a little perseverance and a lot of patience, you too can find God in nature.
