Charting New Trails: From Nursing to Engineering Through the Great Outdoors

Embarking on a new academic journey after years in a different profession can feel like standing at the base of a towering mountain. This spring semester marks the beginning of such an adventure for me, as I transition from being a nurse to pursuing a degree in engineering. It’s a path filled with unknowns, but the lessons learned from backpacking and nature provide a unique perspective on this transition.

Imagine the story of Alex, much like myself, who after years of serving as a healthcare professional, decides to embrace a passion for innovation and problem-solving by studying engineering. Alex, an avid outdoor enthusiast, finds parallels between this significant life change and the experiences on the trail.

Each backpacking trip Alex had embarked on was a journey through unknown territory, much like the leap from nursing to engineering. The trails taught Alex about preparation, resilience, and adaptability—qualities essential for any engineer. Facing the rugged paths, unexpected weather, and the solitude of nature, Alex learned to navigate challenges with determination and creativity.

This spring semester, as Alex steps into the first engineering class, it’s the memories of those hikes that bring comfort and confidence. The trails, with their obstacles and surprises, were much more than just physical endeavors; they were metaphors for life’s journey. Alex realized that embarking on this new academic path was not unlike setting out on a hike in the wilderness. Both required a clear goal, the right tools, a solid plan, and the flexibility to adapt to new challenges.

The most important lesson from the trail, and one that Alex carries into the classroom, is that every step forward is progress, no matter how small. Just as reaching the summit of a mountain is achieved through countless individual steps, so too is the journey through engineering school—a series of challenges and achievements, each building on the last.

As I follow in footsteps similar to Alex’s, I am reminded that the transition from nursing to engineering is not just a change in career paths but a continuation of my life’s journey. With each new challenge, I am equipped with the lessons from both my past experiences and the wisdom of the wilderness.

So, to anyone standing at the base of their own mountain, whether it’s returning to school, changing careers, or facing any significant life change, remember the lessons from nature. Prepare, be resilient, adapt, and most importantly, keep moving forward. The summit awaits.
